Shann and Cortne

Updated: Feb 7, 2019

Each collaboration has their own unique way of working together, every person has a different process. Here we will explore the different ways in which both of these artists create art in their own mediums,

In a group discussion we talked about how Cortne comes about creating music and also how the song she chose for the collaboration came to be.

She mentions that normally for a song to come together it starts with a spark of inspiration, this can come from anywhere at any time, in the car, in bed, in the middle of daily tasks. This spark usually can come in the form of a single line of lyrics, and then a song can be built around that. To build from there she gets into an extremely focused state and says "it can end up like a game, as in associating words and rhyming". She would then take the song to her fellow band mates and they would continue to build from there, though other times a song can stem from a guitar line/riff or an instrumental melody. Once they come together and rehearse the new song, to test it out they take it to a live stage and review from there before they get to final recording.

It is an interesting way to develop music in a band setting because you are able to bounce ideas off of one another and inspire each other. It also gives you another set of eyes to see any obvious mistakes that could be hiding.

The process of writing music through collaboration has always been a staple of song-writing throughout history and that isn't going to change any time soon.

" shared creativity in song-writing continues to thrive as one of its defining forces."

Shann's creative process for visual art,

she has a number of different aspects that come together. She spoke about how she often looks for inspiration in many different places, she says inspiration can spark from album covers, films, Instagram, Pinterest, anything she views, all coming together. She uses these as reference images to create mood boards. These mood boards help to form an aesthetic and also can create a colour pallet to work with. She also uses brainstorming and story boards to further develop her ideas and images.

Shann likes to create limitations to help her work creatively and challenge herself to create something out of her comfort zone, which can lead to something even better than imagined.

Below is a slide show of how the artwork has currently been being developed.

starting with an initial inspiration coming from the recent Mary Poppins film, and finishing with the current ideas and images that are being thrown around.
